Once again, it’s contest time. (I do so enjoy running these)
What does the contest involve?It’s simple. All I’m looking for is a new character that would fit into the TotG world.
What the heck is TotG?You can read all about it in this journal:
[link] So all I have to do is make a new character?You got it! You can create a character for any of the races or even a golem if you so choose (Keep in mind that golems must have an owner and serve a purpose). Just remember, the non-humans characters are based on animals and it has to be a real animal. It can be an extinct animal for all I care, but no dragons/unicorns/rainbow fairy dogs.
That sounds easy, but I can’t draw. Can I still enter?I wanted to open up this contest to include as many people as possible which means I will accept drawings, digital media, photo manips, writing, anything as long as you can create a solid character. That’s the important thing.
What do you want a completed submission to look like?Since the goal is to create a brand new character, a reference sheet is what I want to see. There is no standard for what the reference has to look like, just make sure that you explain the character well. A stick drawing with “her name is Amanda lol” is not going to win you anything. Go into detail, give the character some attitude, some depth, some life. Give me a page long backstory if you want. Tell me their likes, dislikes, dreams, hopes, anything you could think to include in a character reference. I am merely setting some ground rules for you to follow, what you choose to do with your character is completely up to you.
For the submission, the absolute bare requirements are:
Name
Age
Race
Species of Animal (for non-human races only)
Physical Description (only required for written submissions)
I encourage you to add more. Think about where they'd live (the North is generally filled with racial tension between humans and non-humans while the South is more integrated), what do they do for a living, do they have a golem (golems can look like pretty much anything - human, bird, fish, whatever), do they have a family, the list goes on.
Be sure to submit your entry to dA and send me a note with a link. It makes it easier to keep track that way.
Example of a finished entry
Name - Krieden Tres Valn the Golemslayer
Age - 34
Race - Full Blooded Human from Ajax
Physical description - A very large, muscular man. His hair is black and a dark blue tattoo of a scythe curls around his right eye. He has several scars on his body, face and hands from countless battles with nonhumans and golems. Part of his left ear is missing from an old battle with a now dead Sauren, and he shows it off as a mark of pride. He wears heavy plates of armor, but strategically so his movement is not impaired. He carries a warhammer on his back, which is made of solid steel, in addition to twin throwing axes hidden under his cloak. He calls in the "Golembreaker" and uses it as such.
Psychological Breakdown - Valn believes other races inferior to Humans, and magic is their only way of trying to level the playing field. He hates golems, thinking them a tool that the weak use to fight for them. Because of this, he will often sabatoge or even openly fight them!
Views on following races-
Cidae - He would most likely help reinforce the belief some have that they all were wiped out. The kind of magic he hates most is healing magic, as he sees it as a way the incompetent can spread their weakness by living longer. He has nothing wrong with Cidae (other than the fact they aren't human), but he hates healing magic.
Terrans - He delights in Terrans, as he is extremely strong for a human, and likes to show Terrans that he is stronger than them. The only nonhuman race Valn can actually get along with and see eye to eye on some points. He has a general "They're not too bad" attitude with them.
Aves - He knows Aves have weak bones, and he doesn't pay much mind to them. He thinks of them as fragile cowards who won't fight fairly. Nevertheless, he has a couple throwing axes on him just in case he runs into any Aves.
Sauren - He absolutely hates Sauren. Sauren to him are everything he is against. Valn gets angry to even hear of their magic, and has gotten violent towards anyone who views them as the strongest race.
Humans - He loves his fellow humans, thinking them the strongest race, and other races try and suppress them for this reason. He is ashamed of the reliance on engineering, and his hatred for golems outdoes his hatred for any of the races save Sauren.
Basically, don’t do anything that would seem out of place in the TotG world. Having a human character with wings who shoots fireballs and is the greatest alchemist the world has ever known is not realistic in TotG. If you’ve read over the outlines in the other journal and you’re still not sure whether your character would fit, then don’t be afraid to ask me in a note or something.
Would you get the rights to this character if I submit it?Nope. The character would remain yours unless you give me permission to use it. Keep in mind, that this story is still mine. The characters, specific concepts, all mine. I'm just saying that I won't use the character you created without your written consent.
What do I get if I win? And how is this contest being judged?This contest will be judged purely on creativity, originality and effectively communicating your ideas to an audience.
